Threads Now, Facelift Later: Why You Can Have Both"

One of the most common misconceptions I hear from patients is: “If I get PDO threads now, I can’t have a facelift later.” This is completely false — and today, I want to break down the science behind why.
Here’s the truth: PDO threads are made of polydioxanone — a safe, biodegradable material that has been used in surgical sutures for decades. Once placed under the skin, these threads create an immediate lift and also stimulate your body’s natural collagen production. Over time, the threads dissolve completely, leaving behind only the collagen your body built in response.
Why this doesn’t block a future facelift:
They fully dissolve. PDO threads are absorbed by the body in about 6–12 months, leaving no physical barriers for future surgery.
Surgeons are familiar with the material. PDO is the same type of absorbable suture used in many surgeries — including facelifts — so it’s not “foreign” or dangerous to the process.
Collagen is your friend. The extra collagen formed after threads can actually improve skin quality, which can be beneficial going into a surgical facelift later in life.
Where the myth comes from is likely confusion with older thread lift technologies, like permanent barbed sutures made from non-dissolvable materials. Those older threads could cause scar tissue or complications that made future surgery more challenging. But modern PDO threads are different — they’re temporary, safe, and biocompatible.
Bottom line: PDO threads are a fantastic option for patients who want a non-surgical lift and collagen boost now, without closing the door to surgical options in the future. Whether you’re looking for prevention, a refresh, or a subtle lift, threads can be part of a long-term plan that adapts with your needs.
